Decorton has received numerous awards, including -

CONCRETE MANUFACTURES AWARD 2004

National & Regional Award winner
for the “Hindhope” project.

This was an extremely difficult project and called for the tennis court to be constructed at a level of 5.5m above the existing sloped embankment of approximately 35 degrees. In addition, to complicate matters, there was a live sewer main, which ran though centre of the tennis court. This sewer main had to be excavated and re-laid and then back filled with a cement stabilized sand back fill so as to make sure that no future settlement could take place.

In this area of Cape Town, the soils are mainly waterlogged clay. To over come this difficult situation Terraforce L11 retaining blocks where used in conjunction with a GEOFABRIC reinforcement and a clean sandy back fill material which was also cement stabilized in the area immediately behind the retaining blocks.

To deal with the water run off problem from the court DECORTON created a water run off shut, which discharged from court level down 5.5m below in to a storm ware drain at base of the retaining block wall. Also constructed was a vertical block retaining wall viewing platform situated at the centre line of the court with access stairs up to house.

Winning project; Cielo Nel Capo.
The rugged site and difficult access conditions required a number of creative stabilising measures.

Some fairly conventional plant-supportive terraces were built at the lower end of the property to create a large level garden platform. Incorporated in these walls is a storm water retention pond, lined with Terraforce® Terrafix blocks and an overflow of Terraforce® L11 blocks. Due to clayey and at times waterlogged soil conditions, additional reinforcement of backfill was required. Elsewhere on the site, a 6m high vertical composite retaining wall with innovative design was constructed. Rounding off the project around this prestigious estate are a number of earth stabilising walls and toe walls using Terraforce® L11 blocks in smooth and split face elevation.
